Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is a society within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). EMBS applies engineering principles to the biomedical field. This includes imaging, interfacing with the body, assist devices, and many more.
History
The Bioengineering Society was revived in 2001 after a period of inactivity. Dr. Schroeder, a new faculty member at the time and a prior president of the organization helped to restart it. Since then it has been an outlet for those interested in biomedical engineering to hear presentations and become involved in the discipline.
The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society hosts trips to biomedical companies, as well as other university research labs. Every year the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society sends two members to the international EMBS conference (past conferences have been in San Francisco, Beijing, New York, and Hawaii). EMBS also takes on projects to gain experience by working in the field.
In 2005, NDSU EMBS received an Outstanding Performance Award from National IEEE EMBS.
Membership
The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society chapter welcomes anyone interested in the field. We have members from electrical and mechanical engineering, biology, and chemistry. If you would like to enroll, search Engineering under My Organizations in Blackboard and click enroll to receive updates on meetings, tours, and projects.
